The key to unlocking your global team’s potential
How to develop supreme confidence in your global hires
The secret to unlocking your team's true potential?
It's not fancy tools or expensive training.
It's confidence.
When you're developing team members (especially global talent), you've gotta understand:
Not everyone's wired like an entrepreneur.
That “figure it out as you go” mindset that comes naturally to you?
It might terrify them.
Many of these folks have never had a boss who wanted to develop them…
Who encouraged them to take initiative…
Who actually cared about their growth.
So when you throw them a project and say, “Hey, just figure it out!”…
You might think you're being empowering…
But there’s a good chance you’re actually creating anxiety…
And possibly pushing them to randomly quit because they think they’re doing a bad job.
So, how do you build real confidence in your global talent?
Start with what they know
Give them ownership over something they're already good at.
If they're a calendar wizard, have them do something around setting up new corporate calendars and a vacation calendar.
Tell them: “Hey, I know you’ll do a great job with this – just meet with the team, and work together to figure it out.”
This goes in line with another key confidence-building concept:
Baby steps beat giant leaps
Don't throw them into the deep end right away.
Sure, entrepreneurs love that sink-or-swim moment.
But for most people? It's a confidence killer.
Put yourself in their newbie shoes for a second, and imagine being told:
“Hey, we need to create a bunch of SOPs. I know you've never done never done it before. And by the way, it’s important you crush this. But don’t worry, you're in charge!”
Instead, give them approachable, bite-sized increases in responsibility.
Let them build momentum with small wins before tackling bigger challenges…
And their confidence will skyrocket.
Catch them doing things right
Positive reinforcement isn't just for kindergarteners.
When your team members nail something, give them LOTS of positive, accurate empathy and feedback.
This helps develop their sense of self-confidence, and will prime them for more responsibility and leadership going forward.
The bottom line?
If you're not intentional about building confidence, you risk:
Losing great talent who think they're doing a bad job
Creating an environment of anxiety instead of growth
Missing out on your team's full potential
But get this right…
And you'll unlock levels of performance you never thought possible.
