I got some feedback (the right way)

I got some good feedback today and it was delivered the right way.

Feedback is something that we've talked a lot about as a leadership team… and feedback includes giving it to leaders!

To set the scene, our Head of Recruitment Sofia pinged me after a meeting yesterday and said, "Hey can I give you some feedback?"

We both laughed because she's using the correct format.

I said yes of course.

She said, "Yesterday during the monthly recruitment meeting you weren't on camera but you were dropping in, and that included giving sometimes critical commentary. You always talk about how important it is to be on camera to connect with people and you didn't follow your own advice."

“Moving forward I think if you can't be on camera you should be more of a passive participant and if you need to participate actively you should be on camera.”

EXCELLENT FEEDBACK.

She’s 100% right.

I misplayed that; it was awesome.

She did the four steps and it drew attention to a blind spot I had.

In review the four steps of feedback are:

1. Ask for permission

2. Talk about the facts of the issue

3. Talk about the impact of that behavior

4. Talk about what you're expecting moving forward

This works with peers; it works with people that work for you and in this case it worked with Soph's boss's boss and it was delivered expertly!

I'm very proud that occasionally our team listens to my ranting and ravings.

Yallah Habibi,

Jon
