đź’ˇ Empowerment vs. delegation

Delegation is for dorks

Delegation is for amateurs.

I keep seeing people hitting the delegation gong over and over…

And while there’s nothing wrong with delegation…

There’s a far better approach that produces the type of results you are actually after:

Empowerment

Delegation is usually about giving people tasks and instructions.

Low-level stuff.

Empowerment is handing a problem to someone, giving them resources, context, and guidance…

And letting THEM go and solve those problems.

Night-and-day difference.

When you empower instead of delegate…

You create leaders…

You drive accountability…

And you unlock creativity, innovation, and problem solving, because the people closest to the problem are designing the solutions – not the guy three levels away.

The catch?

Empowerment is harder.

Why?

Because you have to work as a leader to empower your team…

Not just as a manager delegating tasks.

Here are my top 3 best practices to creating empowered teams:

1. Provide clear context and end state

Let your teams know:

  • What's going on?

  • Why are we doing this?

  • What’s the end state of this particular challenge or problem?

E.g. The end state is to serve our customers better, or to drive month-on-month growth.

2. Give them the right resources

This looks like giving your teams money, people, and technology so they can accomplish your desired end states.

3. Give them permission to fail

You need to be able to say:

“Look, I'm gonna give you a lot of operating latitude. And if you mess up, it's okay.”

If they don't feel like they can make mistakes…

They're never going to experiment, they're never going to feel empowered…

And they're just going to keep coming to you for everything, forever.

4. One bonus tip

Empowerment takes time.

You're not going to get it on day one.

But this is what it takes if you really want to develop a team of superstars.

Empowering instead of delegating.

I work on this every day…

And I'm far from perfect at it.

But it’s not about doing things “perfect” — it’s a journey your whole team takes, and it takes time to get it right.

Once you start implementing this empowerment concept…

You will be amazed by the changes you can make.
