... So What Would You Do With an American?

Author’s Note: I’ve opened up two coaching slots. Link here to chat about it if you want to work together.

A lot of people want to get started using global talent.

This is a very good idea - and can generate a competitive advantage in almost any industry.

BUT

I get it - it can be a little intimidating, unknown, or risky.

When I take on a new company to work with - the first question I ask is:

“Do you already have any remote employees”?

If the answer is “no” - we’ve got a bunch of work to do.

Adding things like Slack, Clickup, Notion, whatever - moving a company to “remote” takes some work - and you need to set that first remote employee up for success.

However - due in large part to COVID, more and more companies have at least some portion of their workforce working remotely.

YAHTZEE!

This makes the transition to global talent MUCH easier.

When you really think about it, what is the difference between hiring someone on the other side of the US vs hiring/onboarding/managing someone on the other side of the world?

Only a few things when you really get down to it.

I can really only think of three big things (there are others, but these are the big ones)

  • Finding them and running a screening process (you look in different places & you’ll have more volume)

  • Navigating cultural differences

  • How you pay them

Other than that, just “Do what you would do with an American”

Would you have a one hour meeting with a remote American, then expect them to succeed?

Of course not - so don’t do that with your global talent.

Would you have an entry level American administrative employee have murky supervision, and occasionally have the CEO supervise them, then expect them to succeed?

Of course not - so don’t do that with your global talent.

The list goes on and on.

In my experience, its about “In-Office vs Remote” WAY more than it is about “American vs Non-American”.

If you are intimidated just keep reminding yourself “... So What Would I Do With an American?”

Yours in Global Talent,

Jon
